KAJUKENBO IN SACRAMENTO

WHAT IS KAJUKENBO?

A hybrid martial art built for practical application.

Kajukenbo is a martial art developed in Hawaii in the late 1940s. It was created by martial artists from different backgrounds who combined their knowledge to develop a practical and adaptable approach to fighting and self-defense.

The name KAJUKENBO reflects the different martial arts influences that contributed to its development:

KA — Karate
JU — Judo & Jiu jitsu
KEN — Kenpo
BO — Boxing

This combination gives Kajukenbo a diverse approach to training that can incorporate striking, kicking, defensive techniques, takedowns, joint controls, close-range fighting, and practical self-defense.

Rather than being limited to one method of fighting, Kajukenbo emphasizes the ability to adapt techniques and principles to the situation.

ADAPT • RESPOND • OVERCOME

WHAT YOU’LL TRAIN

Kajukenbo training develops a combination of striking, defensive skills, close-range techniques, control, and physical conditioning. Students learn individual techniques while developing the ability to connect them through movement and practical application.

STRIKING & KICKING
Develop punches, kicks, combinations, defensive movement, footwork, and the ability to generate effective power.

PRACTICAL SELF-DEFENSE
Train responses to common attacks while developing awareness, positioning, movement, and the ability to respond under pressure.

TAKEDOWNS & CONTROL
Develop sweeps, throws, takedowns, joint controls, and methods for controlling an opponent when the fight moves into close range.

TAKEDOWNS & CONTROL
Develop sweeps, throws, takedowns, joint controls, and methods for controlling an opponent when the fight moves into close range.

FORMS & TECHNIQUE

Use structured techniques and forms to develop mechanics, coordination, balance, movement, and an understanding of Kajukenbo principles.

CONDITIONING & APPLICATION
Build strength, endurance, toughness, and the ability to apply techniques through partner drills, pad work, resistance, and controlled live training.

THE KAJUKENBO APPROACH

Train with purpose. Adapt to the situation.

Kajukenbo was built around the idea that no single fighting method has every answer. Training develops students who can draw from different skills and adapt their response based on distance, position, pressure, and circumstance.

At IBE Fitness & Martial Arts, Kajukenbo training connects traditional martial arts development with practical application. Students work on technique and fundamentals while also developing the conditioning, movement, reactions, and confidence needed to use those skills under increasing levels of resistance.
